'Imperial Wax Solvent' features a new British-based lineup after the departures of the American musicians involved in writing and performing 2007's 'Reformation Post TLC' - Mark E. Smith, keyboardist Elena Poulou and bassist Dave Spurr remain from the previous incarnation. They are joined by guitarist Pete Greenway (a guest guitarist on the previous album) and drummer Keiron Melling.
Led and dictated by the inimitable curmudgeon Mark E. Smith, The Fall's 27th studio album sees a return to an entirely British line-up of the band after American musicians dominated the previous 'Reformation Post TLC' record. In keeping with Smith's now-legendary demeanour, the factory-like production of this release sees the whole band share writing credits. The songs themselves retain the same gloomy and sarcastic rhetoric (including a cover of 'Strange Town' by The Groundhogs) and are Mark E. Smith through and through - bitter, sardonic and ruthlessly entertaining.
A crucial inspiration to several generations of bands, the Fall virtually defined the late-1970s UK post-punk sound. Fall vocalist Mark E. Smith's sung/spoken rants may owe more to beat poetry than rock & roll, but his sociopolitical iconoclasm and the band's angular, cutting riffs and rhythms placed them squarely at the forefront of Britain's first major post-Pistols musical movement. In the '80s, their rough, guitar-based sounded expanded with the introduction of keyboards and more sophisticated production (largely due to the arrival of Smith's wife Brix as a band member), and personnel came and went, but Smith kept his ragtag rock army soldiering on all the way into the 21st century.
