Better than Only By The Night
9 October, 2008
I bought Because of The Times along with Only By The Night and I believe BOTT to be better than OBTN. Hard to believe? Then read on...
KOL combine rock chords with indie riffs and toe-tapping basslines to deliver a memorable and mesmerizing explosion of sound. The overall feel of BOTT is rawer than OBTN - I daresay more rock than indie - but each track seamlessly mixes with the next and the quality production/ engineering provides a homogenous and slick offering. Every choon builds upon its predecessor to produce an unforgettable album rather than a series of haphazard tracks... the hallmarks of a classic?
Star tracks - 4, 6, 9 to 13
Recommendation - Amazing, a true classic, especially at 3.99 (and before you ask, no, I'm not an employee of HMV!)
If you like this you'll like... Feeder amongst others

Feb 2007
It's not business as usual on the Nashville-based quartet's ambitious, eclectic new album 'Because Of The Times'. Where Kings of Leon's last release, 2005's 'Aha Shake Heartbreak', was "a fuzz-encrusted rocket of controlled violence," as Rolling Stone put it, packed with emphatic two-minute bursts of raunchy guitars, brawny drums, and growled vocals, 'Because Of The Times' finds the Followills (brothers Nathan, Caleb, and Jared, and their first cousin Matthew) opening up, relaxing the rules, and reveling in the joys of their newfound musical freedom.
'Because Of The Times' (the title refers to an annual preachers' conference the boys attended growing up) contains Kings of Leon's first-ever album track that clocks in at longer than five minutes ('Knocked Up'), the first song with vocal effects ('On Call'), and the first one you could verifiably call an arena-rock anthem ('Black Thumbnail'). Then there's the breakneck 'McFearless', the chiming 'Ragoo', the scuzzy 'Charmer', and the waltzing 'The Runner' - a song so pretty, it's damn near a lullaby.
'Because Of The Times' is the third album from American southern rockers Kings Of Leon. Taking their unique fusion of country rock and new-wave to new and exciting levels, this album justifies the immense hype that has surrounded the band since their inception, and will please fans of bands as diverse as Interpol and The Band. Includes the single 'On Call'.
Though Tennessee's Kings of Leon are a rock band from the south, that doesn't mean they're a Southern Rock band. The Followill brothers Caleb, Jared, and Nathan (along with their cousin Matthew) play a straight-ahead, hard-driving brand of rock & roll that owes more to Crazy Horse and the Rolling Stones than it does to Molly Hatchet. Their debut album, 2003's YOUTH & YOUNG MANHOOD showed them to be an earthier equivalent to garage-rock contemporaries like the White Stripes and the Strokes.
