Nov 2003
For Girls Aloud, 2003 has already been a blast. Their debut single 'Sound Of The Underground' stormed to the coveted Christmas No.1 slot and stayed there for a month. 3 months later, it was still in the Top 20 in the UK, Top 10 in the Netherlands, playlisted on all France's major radio networks, in the Top 10 Belgian airplay charts and the third most added single to Australian radio. Now Girls Aloud raise the pop stakes even higher with the release of their stunning debut album, 'Sound Of The Underground'. Featuring the Alison Clarkson/Beatmaster tracks 'Mars Attack', which jumps and fizzes with the trademark Girls Aloud sound and an insane, 'Cantaloop' style jazz piano breakdown and 'Boogie Down Love', which doffs its hat to Primal Scream's 'Rocks' and Blondie's 'Call Me' and a handful of tracks with Swedish uber-producers Murlyn, the girls switch between styles on the album; they show their darker side on the moody 'White Lies', and'Forever And A Night' is an epic windswept ballad, while 'Girls Allowed' is a sassy, attitude-laced disco track ...all in all it adds up to one of the most diverse and exciting debut albums to have hit pop in a very long time.
'Imagine a cross between Blondie and Bananarama, with a smattering of the Spice Girls at their best thrown in and you get the idea...As a pure pop album it's cool, sophisticated and edgy enough for any music collection' - The Sun
This new version of the album includes three new tracks: the ‘Jump’ single, taken from the forthcoming Richard Curtis film ‘Love Actually’, their version of the classic '80s Duran Duran track ‘Girls On Film’ and the brand new track ‘You Freak Me Out’, taken from the new Disney film ‘Freaky Friday’.
This is a re-release of the debut album from Popstars: The Rivals winners Girls Aloud. A blend of pop, R'n'B, new wave, and dance, the Girls have been touted as a mix of Blondie, The Go-Go's, and The Spice Girls. The album features the singles 'Sound Of The Undergound', 'Life Got Cold', 'No Good Advice', and the bonus tracks 'Jump', 'Girls On Film', and 'You Freak Me Out'.
SOUND OF THE UNDERGROUND is the debut album by British girl group Girls Aloud.
Reissue adds three new songs and three music videos.
Unusually for a group catapulted into the nation's consciousness via a reality TV/talent contest (2002's 'Popstars: The Rivals'), Girls Aloud managed to combine phenomenal single and album chart success with genuine critical acclaim. Their collaborations with the Xenomania production team have been particularly lauded, especially on CHEMISTRY (2005). As well as a mainstay of the charts, the five girls were also regular fixtures in the gossip columns, fuelled primarily by Cheryl Cole's much publicised marriage to footballer Ashley Cole and her participation as a judge in the 2008 edition of X-Factor.
