'Life's Rich Pageant' is often seen as a transitional album in REM's career in that it still jingle jangles but it also ROCKS!
'Begin the Begin' (not the Cole Porter song!) kicks off with a slick riff and a howl of feedback and its obvious things have changed. 'These Days' follows this overflowing with life affirming energy and some great drumming. But 'Fall On Me' is where they really nail it; this is REM at their very best; obscure lyrics, stunning harmonies, and jingle-jangle guitars. It's no wonder that this is one of Michael Stipe's favourite songs. The rest of the album holds with this sense of progression and urgency with upbeat rock ('I Believe') and pastoral folk ('Swan Swan H'). This feels like an American album with a true sense of history but with no need for flag waving.
Anyone unaware of REM's output prior to 'Automatic for the People' would do well to check the band's heritage and buy this album.
